Our Trains Network

SMRT Trains is committed to conducting our business in an environmentally responsible way, balancing the interests of our stakeholders.

SMRT GREEN EFFORTS AT A GLANCE

Energy Conservation in SMRT  ENERGY CONSERVATION through installations of LED lighting in our stations, trains, workshops and tunnels, district cooling features and escalators that include variable speed controls

Water conservation in SMRT  DUAL CYCLE RECYCLING systems at train wash plants saves approximately 670,000 litres of fresh water each month

Waste Reduction in SMRT ELIMINATE, REUSE and RECYCLE waste. Close to 1,600 TONNES of scrap metal sent for recycling

SUPPLEMENTING POWER USAGE WITH RENEWABLE ENERGY AT DEPOTS

The Bishan, Tuas and Mandai depots are powered partially by solar energy. Our aim is for the total solar energy harnessed at all SMRT train depots to supplement the energy used for purposes other than trains operation. In January 2022, we commissioned additional solar panels at Tuas West Depot. By FY2023, our target is to increase the solar energy output in Bishan Depot by 150%, while reducing carbon footprints by 2,800 tonnes (equivalent to approx. 1.4 million fire extinguishers). We will continue to explore opportunities to expand the solar PV system.

THOMSON-EAST COAST LINE – BUILDING A MORE SUSTAINABLE RAIL SYSTEM

Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) stations, trains, Operations Control Centre (OCC), as well as Mandai Depot (MDD) were built by the Land Transport Authority (LTA). Unlike the other stations and depots where energy-saving structures were built-in after, TEL stations and MDD were built with sustainability in mind.

TRAIN IS A GREENER MODE OF TRANSPORT

As an organisation, SMRT's efforts to include smarter and energy-efficient technology have contribute towards a greener business operation, but it doesn't and cannot stop with us. To truly reduce our carbon and greenhouse gases, a collective effort between the government, organisations and the community is critical.

The community can play a part by choosing trains as a regular mode of transport as taking the MRT reduces our carbon footprint by close to 90% compared to an average internal combustion engine car.
