SPH Media and Stellar Lifestyle, the business arm of SMRT, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) today to help commuters stay informed at every stage of their journey, bringing news and useful information across SMRT’s transit network.
Signed by Mr Chan Yeng Kit, CEO of SPH Media, and Mr Ngien Hoon Ping, Group CEO of SMRT Corporation Ltd, the partnership redefines how news and content are accessed during everyday travel. This first-of-its-kind, large-scale collaboration integrates SPH Media’s content capabilities with SMRT’s islandwide footprint to reach millions of commuters every day, with news updates and convenient access to print publications.
This partnership transforms everyday travel into a shared public-service experience by weaving SPH Media’s news and information across every stage of the journey. From news bulletins by The Straits Times on SMRT’s audio network at stations, to digital screens at concourses, platforms and bus shelters, commuters can stay informed at every touchpoint.
The MOU also marks the launch of "In Perspective," a new flagship content programme co-developed by SPH Media with SMRT as a key partner. The programme brings about a research and insight-led approach to content creation, designed to offer a data-informed view of commuters’ expectations in an evolving transport landscape. By translating research-driven perspectives into storytelling, the programme aims to surface thoughtful and grounded content, while reinforcing public transport spaces as platforms for meaningful engagement.
Starting from the second half of 2026, commuters can access:
1. News Content Across Commute Spaces
Timely news highlights and top stories from SPH Media, as such The Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao, will be displayed across SMRT’s out-of-home digital screens located at both concourse and platform levels, keeping commuters informed throughout their journeys within the train stations. With access to relevant updates, Singaporeans are better empowered to decide how they can respond to critical or relevant events.
2. Engaging Audio Experience at MRT Stations
News bulletins by The Straits Times will run across MRT stations operated by SMRT. This enhances the station environment and delivers relevant updates to commuters as they move through the transit network.
3. Easy Access to Print Publications at Train Stations
Vending machines offering SPH Media newspapers will be installed at SMRT’s train stations to offer greater convenience for commuters. This provides an easy, on-the-go option for those who prefer hard copies, complementing the partnership’s digital and audio touchpoints.
Mr Chan Yeng Kit said, “This collaboration reflects the shared role that SMRT and SPH Media play as national companies with a public-service mission. As Singapore’s trusted national news company, SPH Media delivers credible journalism that audiences rely on. By working with SMRT’s transport network, we bring reliable news and information into commuters’ daily journeys — helping both organisations fulfil our mission to serve Singaporeans.”
Mr Ngien Hoon Ping said, “At SMRT, our mission has always been to move people and enhance everyday lives. Through this partnership with SPH Media, we are extending that mission by enriching the commuter experience with timely and trusted newsworthy information. By bringing together SPH Media’s content expertise and SMRT’s transport network, we aim to make every journey more connected, more engaging, and more enjoyable for our commuters.”
