Singapore, 23 August 2025 – Commuters can now enjoy a moment of play and test their wits on the go, as SMRT Trains and Central Singapore Community Development Council (CS CDC) unveiled giant chess sets at Bras Basah and Botanic Gardens MRT stations on the Circle Line (CCL).
This first-of-its-kind initiative in Singapore’s public transport network reflects SMRT Trains’ continued commitment to making its stations more vibrant, and through creative ways, providing spaces where people can connect with one another in a fun and light-hearted manner. The giant chess sets will be available to the public from today for at least a year.
Guest-of-Honour Ms Denise Phua, Mayor of Central Singapore District, and Adviser to Jalan Besar Group Representation Constituency Grassroots Organisations (Kampong Glam) said: “These giant chess installations at our train stations represent more than just a game, they're catalysts for community connection. In our fast-paced city, they offer commuters a moment to pause and engage with others. Through Chess @ Central, we're making recreational learning accessible to everyone, regardless of age, background, or ability.”
Mr Lam Sheau Kai, President of SMRT Trains said: “Beyond delivering safe, reliable, and sustainable transport, we strive to make every journey more engaging and meaningful. Through initiatives spanning the arts, music, and sports, SMRT Trains seeks to connect with communities of diverse interests. The introduction of our giant chess sets is one such effort, encouraging commuters, young and old, to take a mindful break, enjoy strategic play, and foster social connections during their daily travels.”
This latest initiative is part of SMRT’s Communities in Station programme, which aims to enhance vibrancy and enrich the commuter experience across its network. Other ongoing initiatives include the placement of specially commissioned pianos and community harp at selected MRT stations, inviting aspiring and talented musicians to delight fellow commuters with spontaneous musical performances. Sports enthusiasts may also enjoy free-to-use table tennis tables for active play and friendly competition at Esplanade and Marina Bay stations on the Circle Line.
