28 March 2026
SMRT Trains has set a new Singapore Book of Records title with a 24-hour piano relay at Bayfront MRT station, featuring more than 50 musicians performing continuously from 27 to 28 March.
The relay surpassed the previous 13-hour record set in 2017 and marked the first time such an event has been staged within a public transport space, transforming a train station into a live performance venue for commuters and the wider community.
Bringing together participants aged five to 88, the event showcased the breadth and diversity of Singapore’s music scene.
Highlights included accomplished pianist Danny Koh, who has performed at international diplomatic and cultural events, and 10-year-old Shayne Ko, one of Singapore’s youngest buskers, who has charmed many with his multi-instrument performances.
The record attempt was officiated by Mr Ong Eng Huat, President of the Singapore Book of Records. Musicians performed seamlessly across three pianos to maintain uninterrupted play, in accordance with record requirements.
Mr Lam Sheau Kai, President, SMRT Trains, said: “This event reflects how our stations can serve as more than transit points — becoming platforms for the arts and shared community experiences. We aim to bring more meaningful, accessible performances into everyday spaces for commuters.”
From Transit Nodes to Community Spaces
Launched in 2019, SMRT’s Communities in Stations programme enhances the commuter experience through four pillars: arts, heritage, wellness, and outreach.
The Piano Relay is the inaugural event of the SMRT Pianorama Series, a year-long line-up of live piano performances across our stations. It builds on SMRT's community piano installations that have sparked spontaneous performances and strong commuter engagement.
Building on a Growing Arts Portfolio
The Pianorama Series adds to SMRT’s expanding portfolio of placemaking efforts.
In 2022, SMRT launched Comic Connect to mark its 35th anniversary, featuring heritage-inspired murals across 35 stations and interchanges. The project was well-received and reinforced SMRT’s commitment to integrating arts and culture into everyday journeys.
