SMRT Celebrates Inaugural World Public Transport Day

SMRT Corporation (SMRT) joins the worldwide celebration of World Public Transport Day (WPTD), a new initiative by the Union Internationale des Transports Publics (UITP). The UITP is a global non-profit advocacy organisation that connects public transport stakeholders to advance sustainable urban mobility.

As a member of the UITP, SMRT marks this occasion with a specially curated exhibition titled “On Track: Engineering Your Commute”. The exhibition offers a rare, upclose look at the critical train components that underpin the reliability and safety of the rail network. Visitors can view sections of the rail track, including the ballast under and around the tracks that keep it stable and safe, as well as the fastclips and e-clips that secure and maintain proper rail alignment.

Visitors can also learn more about specific functions of these components, such as a section of the third rail that supplies power to the trains, a current collector device that draws electricity to keep trains moving, and a tread brake unit that allows trains to stop at stations. Visitors will gain a deeper understanding of the engineering and effort involved in keeping our trains running safely and smoothly.

The exhibition was officially unveiled by Guest-of-Honour, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Transport and Ministry of National Development Ms Sun Xueling.

Mr Ngien Hoon Ping, Group Chief Executive Officer, SMRT Corporation, said, “We are pleased to be a part of the first World Public Transport Day. Beyond promoting sustainable urban mobility, public transport plays an important part in our daily lives. We hope visitors to this exhibition will come away with a deeper understanding of what makes up our rail network, and how we keep Singapore moving.”

The exhibition will be held at Bayfront MRT station from 17 April to 16 June. SMRT has also curated a series of community activities at selected MRT stations and bus interchanges in celebration of WPTD. These include a showcase of artworks by students from special education schools and schools under SMRT’s Adopt‑A‑Station programme. The artworks will be displayed at MRT stations such as Toa Payoh, Queenstown and Tanjong Pagar.

There will also be Instagram‑worthy photo spots across 17 stations on the Circle Line, North-South Line, East-West Line and Thomson-East Coast Line. These spots showcase the visual diversity of SMRT’s rail network — from modern, symmetrical platforms and colourthemed stations to distinctive architectural interiors and facades. SMRT hopes commuters will have fun at these experiential touchpoints and create their own memories of taking the MRT, on top of celebrating with our worldwide community to mark the essential role played by public transport.
