1. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced today that it has awarded the tender for the Serangoon-Eunos Package to SMRT Buses. The contract includes 26 routes and will take effect on 13 June 2027.
2. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said SMRT Buses was awarded the Serangoon-Eunos Bus Package because its proposal offered good value and demonstrated strong capabilities in operating and maintaining electric buses. LTA also considered SMRT Buses’ workforce initiatives, including plans to attract new employees and grow a more diverse local pool of bus captains.
3. The Serangoon-Eunos Bus Package will expand SMRT Buses’ operations. The package will operate from the new Kim Chuan Bus Depot, which is part of the Kim Chuan Depot Extension (KCDE). KCDE supports the expansion of both rail and bus operations. The underground extension will increase stabling and maintenance capacity for the Circle Line, while the above ground bus depot will serve as the operational base for the Serangoon-Eunos Bus Package.
4. When the Kim Chuan Bus Depot opens in 2027, it will provide closer integration between SMRT’s bus and rail operations. This includes stronger operational support for bus bridging services during disruptions on rail lines operated by SMRT Trains.
5. Mr Tan Peng Kuan, Managing Director, SMRT Buses, said: “SMRT Buses is honoured to be awarded the tender to operate the Serangoon-Eunos Bus Package. We thank LTA for their trust and are committed to delivering the value and service standards set out in our tender proposal. We also thank the National Transport Workers’ Union for their continued partnership. We understand that a change of operator may bring uncertainty for affected employees. We will work closely with LTA, NTWU and the incumbent operator to ensure a smooth transition. We look forward to welcoming those who choose to join SMRT Buses, supporting them through the transition, and beginning this new chapter together in 2027.”
6. The Serangoon-Eunos Bus Package will be the fourth bus package operated by SMRT Buses. SMRT Buses also operates the Choa Chu Kang–Bukit Panjang, Woodlands and Jurong West bus packages. The Jurong West Bus Package was awarded in 2023.
