Taking a breather and enjoying a mid-day pressure-point massage may sound like a luxury, but this is now made accessible through the new “Reflexology On-the-Go” initiative introduced by SMRT Trains. Launched in partnership with Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped (SAVH), this first-of-its-kind initiative in Singapore’s public transport network will see commuters enjoy a complimentary 10-minute shoulder massage provided by hired SAVH professionals.
There is a total of three sessions - the inaugural session was held this afternoon at Kent Ridge MRT station with Guest of Honour Ms Teoh Zsin Woon, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, launching the initiative. Subsequent two sessions will take place at Tanjong Pagar station and Shenton Way station on 17 November and 1 December respectively. Interested commuters can sign up on a first-come, first-served basis via the link below [1]. Each session offers 38 massage slots - a symbolic nod to SMRT’s 38 years of service.
Mr Lam Sheau Kai, President, SMRT Trains, said, “This pioneering initiative reflects our commitment to caring for commuters’ well-being while fostering inclusivity within our network. By partnering with SAVH, we hope to create meaningful employment for visually impaired masseurs while offering commuters a refreshing way to relieve stress. ‘Doing Good’ is our way of celebrating 38 years of serving Singapore; it is a promise we will continue to uphold.”
SAVH’s Executive Director, Mr Samuel Choo, said: “We are pleased to partner SMRT on this inaugural initiative that promotes commuter wellness while showcasing the skills and professionalism of our masseurs with visual impairment. This collaboration creates meaningful work opportunities for our team and allows the public to experience their talents firsthand. Together with like-minded partners like SMRT and the public, we hope to foster greater inclusion and empower more persons with visual impairment to contribute actively to society.”
To further SMRT’s ongoing efforts to support commuter wellness, the public transport operator also announced that the Health@Station Kiosk initiative is set to expand to four additional MRT stations on the Circle Line: Kent Ridge, Labrador Park, one-north and Tai Seng. Since the initial roll-out in August 2024 at Tanjong Pagar station followed by Promenade station (Circle Line), the existing Health Kiosks have recorded over 200,000 blood pressure readings to date. This initiative provides commuters with convenient access to basic health screening tools such as blood pressure monitors and Body Mass Index (BMI) checkers.
Reflexology On-the-Go is the latest addition to SMRT’s Communities in Station programme, which aims to enhance vibrancy and enrich the commuter experience across its network. Recent initiatives include organising a movie night in celebration of Children’s Day at Canberra MRT station and introducing giant chess sets at Bras Basah and Botanic Gardens MRT stations on the Circle Line. Other ongoing initiatives include the placement of specially commissioned pianos and community harp at selected stations, inviting aspiring and talented musicians to delight fellow commuters with spontaneous musical performances. Sports enthusiasts may also enjoy free-to-use table tennis tables for active play and friendly competition at Esplanade and Marina Bay stations on the Circle Line.
