Bukit Panjang LRT: Signalling System and Fleet Renewal Nears Completion, Station Lifts to be Upgraded

Providing Better Commuter Experience and More Reliable Service

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is pleased to share that the ongoing BPLRT renewal programme has made good and steady progress. Since 2022, we have introduced new vehicles, modified vehicles and the control system, and decommissioned legacy vehicles progressively, to ensure minimal impact to commuters while bringing us closer to smoother and more reliable journeys for commuters.

    1. To date, 14 of 19 new third-generation Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs) have been deployed for passenger service. 11 of the 13 second-generation LRVs have also completed their upgrading works and are running in passenger service.
    1. Since 2022, works have also been carried out progressively to upgrade the existing BPLRT signalling system to a new Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system, similar to that used on MRT lines. The new CBTC signalling system allows better control of train speeds, which will allow commuters to enjoy smoother and more reliable rides.
    1. The remaining new third-generation LRVs and upgraded second-generation LRVs, along with the completion of CBTC signalling works, are expected to be deployed by the end of 2025.
    1. Upgrades to the Operations Control Centre (OCC) and power rail replacement activities are also ongoing and are due to be completed by end-2026.
    1. In addition, the entire power supply system for the BPLRT has also been fully upgraded with increased capacity, including dedicated power supply monitoring and control systems.

Next Phase of Signalling System Integration Testing

Over the past months, we have been carrying out intensive testing of the new CBTC signalling system during engineering hours. We are now ready to proceed to the next phase, where we will subject the new CBTC signalling system to rigorous and comprehensive tests to ensure proper integration with the new and upgraded LRVs.

To facilitate this phase of systems integration testing, the BPLRT will be closed for two Sundays on 31 August and 21 September 2025. This is needed to provide a longer period for continuous testing of the new signalling system simulating actual operating conditions, thereby ensuring that the various BPLRT systems can operate safely and reliably when they are rolled out for commuter service.

Similar to previous full-day closures, a shuttle bus service, LRT Shuttle B, will be provided on 31 August and 21 September 2025. It will operate in the direction of BPLRT Service B, at a frequency of 5 to 15 minutes. Commuters may also take existing bus services to continue their journeys.

Additional service adjustments will be required in 2026 as we enter the final phases of BPLRT system renewal works.

Lift Upgrading at all BPLRT station

LTA will also be upgrading the lifts at all BPLRT stations to better serve commuters. BPLRT lift upgrading works will commence from 11 August 2025 and are expected to complete by March 2027. These lifts have been operating since the commencement of BPLRT service and will be replaced.

The new lifts will be easier to use for wheelchair-users, as they will come with tilted floor indicators to improve visibility, rear wall mirrors, and operating panels along the side of the lift car. Lift buttons will also be larger and illuminated for better visibility (please refer to Annex A). The lifts will also have energy-saving features such as energy efficient motors and drives, complemented with LED lighting to reduce energy consumption.

Commuters can refer to the posters and banners at all BPLRT stations for information on the lift upgrading schedule, travel alternatives, and the latest updates. Staff will be stationed at affected stations to assist commuters in the initial phase (please refer to Annex B for further details and schedule of lift upgrading works).

We thank commuters and residents for their understanding and patience, as we continue to improve the BPLRT reliability and commuter experience.
