SMRT Trains launches “SMRT’s Music in Community” to enhance vibrancy and commuter experience in stations

  1. Singapore, 22 July 2023 – Commuters can now flex their musical talents after SMRT Trains unveiled a specially commissioned piano that is open to the public at Bayfront MRT station on the Circle Line today, as part of “SMRT’s Music in Community” project. The project aims to enhance vibrancy within its stations and enrich commuters’ overall experience on its network.

  1. To make it more meaningful, the piano frame was decorated by more than 200 students, aged between four to 13, from five schools – APSN Chaoyang School, APSN Katong School, My First Skool Chin Swee, PCF Sparkletots Preschool @ Punggol Coast Blk 410A (EY), and Skool4Kidz Preschool @ Sembawang Sunbreeze, providing the students with a platform to showcase their creative talents.

  1. The piano at Bayfront MRT station (Circle Line) will be one of three where members of the public, including commuters, can play on. Two other pianos will be placed in SMRT’s network by the end of August this year – one at Orchard MRT station on the North-South Line, and the other at Tanjong Pagar station on the East-West Line.

  1. The decorative artwork by the students was mounted onto the piano’s frame by students from APSN Chaoyang and APSN Katong, together with Mrs Josephine Teo, Minister for Communications and Information and Second Minister for Home Affairs, who attended the launch as its Guest-of-Honour.

  1. Mr Lam Sheau Kai, President, SMRT Trains, said: “While we continue to focus on providing our commuters with safe, reliable and sustainable public transport service, we are also exploring ways to enrich people’s commuting experience. Our commuters come from diverse backgrounds, but music is a common denominator that many can relate to. “SMRT’s Music in Community” is one of our initiatives to liven up our station spaces, spark conversations, and connect communities.”

  1. The three pianos, which are sponsored by Singapore FOZL Group Pte Ltd, CREC Construction Pte Ltd, and VIPTeacher Pte Ltd, will be placed at the aforementioned MRT stations for a year, before they are donated to better serve other community groups.

  1. “SMRT’s Music in Community” is part of the Communities in Station programme that aims to strengthen affinity with communities around SMRT’s network and enhance commuters’ experience. It includes initiatives such as Comic Connect – a collaboration between Singapore’s pioneer rail operator and members of the local art community to install heritage-themed comic wall murals across 35 SMRT-operated MRT stations island-wide.
